Compile options can be specified on a global level in the editor preferences and on a per source level for each source member (which overrides the global preferences).

The connection to the server is the central component of the application. The main properties are the name and the hostname or the IP address of the server. [ Connection wizard - general settings] Authentification The username and password for the server connection are optional. If the username and password are not specified the username and password have to be entered everytime a connection to the server is made.

The preferred way to create a new page is to make a link to the new page in an existing place like this: [[my_new_page]] To have the pages interlinked with another you can now save this page. But if you don't want to have the link on the page but want to create a new page click on Preview and then click on the new link.

Source file members can be edited with the editor plugin. A file member can either be opened via the context menu or with a double click on the member in the Remote Explorer view. The member can be locked on edit (see editor preferences). The editor supports a read-only open mode and an edit mode.

To not have to browse through all objects on the filesystem filter rules can be created to only show the wanted objects in the Remote Explorer. Filter rules can be created to filter objects depending on their “class” (library, object, member) and filtered by name, type or attribute.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION Headless Build Eclipse headless Build is a Process which does not require a user interface (or any other interaction) for building the product/application. Until Eclipse 3.5 it has been very cumbersome to create a headless build process. With the further development in Eclipse 3.5 it has been made much easier.

The editor can be downloaded from the RPG Next Gen site. The content of the ZIP archive needs just to be extracted at the desired location for the application. The extraction is the whole installation process. There needs nothing more to be done.

key_bindings

It seems that Eclipse does not support to show key bindings in the main menu if the action is declared through an extension point and not added programmatically. (At least I have found no way and nobody who could help me with it. --- Mihael Schmidt 2009/05/27 21:34 )

navigating_resources

To navigate through the resources on the server the “Remote Explorer” view can be used. The view “Remote Explorer” displays the connection to the server and the resources on the server in a tree view. It displays only resources from the QSYS filesystem.

If you are having problems connecting to your server with the editor first check the log file. And if you are asking yourself the question “What log file?” you should check the page eclipse_launch_parameter. Perhaps it is a network problem or configuration problem (yes, as always ... it is never the program ;-) )

workspace_location

If you don't specify anything on startup your workspace will have the name workspace and will be located at your current directory (not necessarily the directory of the application). Knowing the location of the workspace folder is useful for a variety of reasons including viewing the .log file where you can see errors that may have been thrown by the RPG Next Gen application. You can find the .log file at workspace/.metadata/.log.
